What changes when you convert PDF to JPG and back to PDF?

Pages can look similar while searchable text and clickable links change. Download the original, extracted pages and image PDF to compare the same document.

Keep pages as PDF when you only need an extract

For a few pages from an application or report, Split PDF keeps the result in PDF format. Use PDF to images when you need a picture for a message or an image editor. It renders the whole page, rather than extracting the original photo files embedded in it.

Three versions of one original

Our three-page sample contains a cover, two attachments, the text FIND-ME-2026 and a guide link on every page. We extracted the range 2,1 into one PDF. Separately, we rendered all three pages to 150dpi JPG and rebuilt a PDF using A4 with a 20pt margin. The table below links to the actual files.

The range 2,1 does not reverse pages: the output is cover, then attachment A, in original order. Use Organize PDF to reorder pages.

Visible text is not always searchable text

Open each file in a PDF viewer, search for FIND-ME-2026, then select and copy a sentence. The original and extract retain text; the image PDF in this experiment has no extractable text or links. Reading text from an image requires OCR, which this service does not provide.

Putting JPG images into a PDF does not recreate a text layer. A scanned original may already be unsearchable before conversion.

An image PDF can be larger

This simple text document became larger when rebuilt from images. PDF → JPG → PDF is therefore not a general compression method. Check the recipient's accepted format and size limit first. Consider the original application's export settings or a dedicated compression tool when size matters. This service does not compress PDFs.

Check the downloaded file

For images, compare small text and file sizes in our resolution examples. For documents, check page count, search, links and readability in the saved result. Keep the original: preservation of digital signatures, bookmarks, forms and accessibility structure is not guaranteed.

Image conversion and watermarks do not securely remove confidential content. Use a dedicated redaction tool and verify its output separately.

Results from the same document

2026-10-21 · Synthetic documents we created, processed by the actual browser PDF tool engine and Poppler at 150dpi JPEG. Character counts use pdftotext with consecutive whitespace collapsed to one space. Links are PDF link annotations. These observations apply to this sample; they do not guarantee preservation of features, file size or quality for other PDFs.
